stc says it has become the first operator in the region to commercially deploy Huawei's 50 Gigabit Passive Optical Network technology, a fixed-network upgrade the company tied to its LEAP 2026 partner recap.

stc Group says it has become the first operator in the region to commercially deploy Huawei's 50 Gigabit Passive Optical Network technology, a fixed-network upgrade the company has tied to LEAP 2026 as part of a wider recap of its vendor partnerships at the show. Passive optical network, or PON, is the technology behind most fibre-to-the-home and fibre-to-the-business connections: a single fibre strand from an exchange is split, passively, to serve multiple customer premises without powered equipment in between. The industry has moved through successive generations of PON as demand for bandwidth has grown, and 50G PON is the current top tier, offering roughly five times the peak per-port capacity of the 10G PON technology most operators, stc included, have deployed at scale over the past decade. This is not the first time stc and Huawei have worked on the technology together. The two companies ran what they described as the first 50G PON live trial in the Middle East back in February 2023, testing the technology on stc's existing optical network alongside live 10G PON traffic. What stc's LEAP 2026 recap describes is a different and later stage — commercial deployment rather than a trial — though the company has not said how many exchanges or customers are now served by it, when the rollout began, or what proportion of its fibre footprint the upgrade covers. The stated purpose is capacity for a network under growing strain from two directions at once: consumer demand for higher fixed-broadband speeds, and an expanding 5G network, which increasingly leans on fibre for backhaul — the links carrying traffic from mobile towers back into the core network. A denser, higher-capacity fixed layer supports both without needing to run entirely separate infrastructure for each, a logic similar to stc's parallel radio-hardware upgrade with Ericsson, also tied to LEAP 2026 , which is aimed at the mobile side of the same network. For business customers, the extra headroom matters more than for most home users: enterprises buying dedicated fibre links for AI workloads, cloud connectivity or data-heavy applications are the segment most likely to need, and pay for, capacity beyond what 10G PON offers, which makes commercial 50G PON as much a business-services upgrade as a mass-market one. The claim sits inside a longer list stc set out around LEAP 2026 covering its work with AWS, Nokia, Ericsson and Kyndryl across cloud, AI and network infrastructure, a list that also included the kind of AI-driven network automation deals operators like Mobily have been signing with Ericsson . The 50G PON line was one item among several rather than the subject of its own press release, which makes it harder to verify independently: no dedicated Huawei or stc announcement naming the deployment has surfaced alongside it, and "first in the region to commercially deploy" is stc's own framing of the milestone rather than an independently confirmed claim. Huawei has continued to develop the PON portfolio well beyond the version stc and it tested in 2023, and by mid-2026 the vendor was showcasing newer optical-network products elsewhere at industry events, which puts stc's deployment inside a fast-moving product cycle rather than at the technology's leading edge globally. Nokia's own newly opened Riyadh R&D centre , working on a different corner of the same automation trend, is a reminder that all three of stc's major network vendors are racing to plant a deeper technical footprint in the kingdom this year.
