Cairo is In a major step toward digital transformation, Cairo International Airport has launched its new AI-powered virtual assistant, “Maryam.” The service was developed in partnership between Egyptian Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation (EHCAAN) and Orange Egypt as part of a broader plan to modernize Egypt’s airports and improve passenger services.
The AI assistant, available across interactive kiosks and digital screens throughout the terminals, helps travelers in both Arabic and English with real-time information about flights, facilities, arrival and departure procedures, transportation, and nearby attractions. The launch marks the first implementation of this kind in Egypt’s aviation industry, signaling a shift toward data-driven passenger engagement.
EHCAAN has outlined that “Maryam” fits within its nationwide digital transformation strategy aimed at enhancing the traveler experience across Egypt’s airports. The technology enables faster information access, streamlines operational communication, and reduces pressure on staff during peak hours. Orange Egypt’s role extends beyond implementation, it provides the underlying connectivity and infrastructure that power the system.
Through “Maryam,” passengers can navigate everything from gate changes and luggage tracking to airport amenities such as lounges, food courts, and duty-free shops. The platform also offers transport guidance, including taxi, ride-hailing, and limousine services. For airport authorities, the AI system generates valuable insights into passenger behavior and service bottlenecks, helping guide future operational improvements.
The rollout at Cairo International Airport is the first phase of a national program to digitize Egypt’s major airports. Plans are already in motion to introduce the system at Sphinx International Airport, coinciding with the upcoming opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum.
Globally, similar digital transformations are being seen in the aviation industry. Singapore Changi Airport, Heathrow Airport, and Dubai International Airport have all integrated AI-driven assistants to improve passenger navigation, automate check-ins, and personalize traveler communication. Cairo’s adoption of “Maryam” aligns Egypt with this global movement toward smart, connected airports.
The initiative reflects Egypt’s broader commitment to adopting advanced technologies across public infrastructure and services. As more airports nationwide embrace AI, “Maryam” could serve as a model for enhancing customer interaction and operational efficiency in one of Africa’s busiest aviation hubs.
For travelers passing through Cairo International Airport, the new system offers real-time digital support with a human touch an early sign of how airports in the region are embracing artificial intelligence to redefine the travel experience.
