Egypt’s ITIDA and Plug and Play support 61 Upper Egypt startups through the Aswan Bootcamp, helping them secure $3.7M in funding and expand regional innovation.

Egypt is continuing to decentralize its startup ecosystem as the Information Technology Industry Development Agency partnered with Plug and Play Tech Center to support 61 startups across Upper Egypt, with participating companies collectively securing approximately $3.7 million (EGP 200 million) in funding.

The milestone follows the conclusion of the Aswan Bootcamp Series, an initiative launched in November 2024 to nurture early stage technology startups outside Egypt’s traditional innovation hubs. The program targeted founders from Upper Egypt, including Aswan and neighboring governorate, with a focus on expanding access to funding, mentorship, and technical expertise.

Designed as an intensive accelerator, the bootcamp combined hands-on technical training with mentorship from industry experts, enabling founders to refine business models, strengthen product market fit, and prepare for investment rounds. The results are already visible, with several participating startups successfully attracting capital from investors, highlighting growing interest in opportunities beyond Cairo.

The initiative forms part of a broader strategy led by Egypt’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to build a more geographically inclusive innovation economy. Historically, Egypt’s startup activity has been concentrated in Cairo, but programs like this aim to unlock entrepreneurial potential in underserved regions and integrate them into the national tech ecosystem.

The Aswan Bootcamp was initially supported by international partners, including the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), but later continued under ITIDA’s funding following shifts in development cooperation. Despite these changes, strong demand reflected in over 150 applications and the successful completion of multiple program phases underscored the viability of scaling such initiatives nationwide.

Egypt’s startup ecosystem has been steadily gaining momentum, supported by a young population, increasing venture capital activity, and government backed initiatives aimed at fostering entrepreneurship. The success of the Upper Egypt cohort reflects a broader trend of regional diversification in startup creation and funding, as investors begin to explore opportunities beyond established urban centers.

Looking ahead, ITIDA plans to replicate similar accelerator programs in other regions, including the Nile Delta, as part of its long term vision to position Egypt as a nationally distributed innovation hub. By expanding access to capital and resources, the agency aims to ensure that high growth startups can emerge from across the country, contributing to economic development and job creation.

The $3.7 million raised by participating startups signals not only the effectiveness of targeted accelerator programs but also the untapped potential of regional ecosystems, which are increasingly becoming a focal point for both policymakers and investors in Egypt’s evolving startup landscape.
