ChatGPT launches interactive learning tools for math and science, expanding access for MENA students

OpenAI announced Tuesday that ChatGPT now generates interactive visual explanations for over 70 math and science topics, allowing students to manipulate variables in real time and see how changes affect outcomes instantly. The feature is available to all logged in ChatGPT users globally.

The dynamic visual explanations let users interact directly with mathematical and scientific concepts instead of viewing static diagrams or reading text-based explanations. When exploring the Pythagorean theorem, students can adjust triangle side lengths and watch the hypotenuse update immediately. For compound interest calculations, users can change the principal, interest rate, and time period to see how each variable affects the final amount. Similar interactive modules are available for topics including Charles' Law, exponential decay, Hooke's Law, kinetic energy, linear equations, and Ohm's Law.

To access the feature, users ask ChatGPT questions like "What is a lens equation?" or "How can I find the area of a circle?" ChatGPT responds with both a text explanation and an interactive module they can manipulate. OpenAI said it plans to expand the feature to include additional topics later.

According to OpenAI, more than 140 million people use ChatGPT weekly for help with math and science. The company did not specify the geographic distribution of these users, but acknowledged that students across multiple regions rely on the platform for educational support.

The launch reflects a broader shift in how AI companies approach education. Google's Gemini launched similar interactive diagrams in November 2025. ChatGPT has previously released other educational features including study mode, which guides users through problems step by step, and QuizGPT, which allows users to create flashcards and request quizzes on any topic.

In MENA countries including Egypt, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates, where educational resources vary significantly by region and socioeconomic status, the availability of interactive learning tools represents expanded access to educational support. According to education researchers, many students in the region lack access to qualified science and math teachers, well-equipped laboratory facilities, or specialized tutoring services.

Amira Hassan, an education technology researcher based in Cairo, told TechScoop that interactive learning tools address a specific gap in MENA education systems. "Many students don't have access to tutoring or experimental learning environments," Hassan said. "Tools that make abstract concepts tangible can help bridge that gap, particularly for students in underserved areas."

However, Hassan noted limitations. ChatGPT's interactive visuals are primarily available in English, which may reduce their effectiveness for students more comfortable in Arabic, Urdu, or other languages. Additionally, interactive tools cannot address systemic educational challenges including teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, or outdated curricula.

"The tool helps individual students understand concepts better," Hassan said. "But it doesn't solve the structural problems in education systems that make qualified instruction inaccessible to many students in the first place."

OpenAI did not provide specific data on how interactive explanations affect learning outcomes or retention. The company said the feature has been designed based on educational research suggesting that interactive engagement with concepts improves understanding, but did not release studies demonstrating this effect in practice.

Google's launch of similar interactive features last year indicated that multiple AI companies are pursuing this approach to education. Industry analysts expect interactive learning tools to become standard features in educational AI platforms over the next two years.

The feature is available at no additional cost to ChatGPT users. Free users and paid subscribers can access the interactive visuals equally.
