About UMC Capital
UMC Capital is the corporate venture capital arm of United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), a semiconductor foundry listed in Taiwan and on the New York Stock Exchange. Its website describes it as an evergreen fund that provides long-term capital, management consulting and other support to portfolio companies. It invests globally using venture capital methods and through mergers and acquisitions, and it is not limited to a particular round or stage.
The website says UMC Capital was founded in 2001 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of UMC. It lists offices in the United States, China and Taiwan, and its contact page gives a Taipei address in the Neihu district. The Chinese-language version of the site says the firm focuses on semiconductors, linked to UMC's wafer foundry business, and on the artificial intelligence of things.
Kris Peng is president. The team page also names Jane Tien as chief financial officer, and lists vice presidents and directors, several of whom joined the firm between 2004 and 2018. The firm says its platform draws on more than 40 years of UMC best practice in deep technology and can help portfolio companies with product enhancement, solution delivery, proofs of concept, management guidance and access to partner companies.
The portfolio page lists 58 companies. Examples named there include Silicon Box, UVeye, HyperLight, Appier, NeuroBlade, Sonatus, Taranis and Ramon.Space. In June 2026 UMC Capital took part in HyperLight's 80 million dollar Series C round, which MediaTek led. HyperLight, a Cambridge, Massachusetts photonics company, said the money would go toward manufacturing capacity, customer qualification and its thin-film lithium niobate chiplet platform.
UMC Capital does not publish its fund size, the amount it invested in HyperLight, or financial results, and no reported funding rounds for UMC Capital itself were found.
