About Tutor House
Tutor House is a United Kingdom tutoring marketplace that connects families with tutors for private lessons, online or in person. TechCrunch described it in 2019 as covering primary school, GCSE, A-level and university subjects. TechScoop places its origin in London.
Alex Dyer, a former teacher, founded the company and served as its chief executive. TechCrunch and Wamda give the founding year as 2012, TechScoop gives 2013 and Startups.co.uk gives 2015. TechCrunch reported that the business was self-funded until 2019.
In 2019 TechCrunch listed private tuition at home or remotely, A-level and pre-U retake courses, residential courses and homeschooling support. Tutors paid a 20 percent commission on each booking, reduced for tutors who booked more than 20 hours a month, and the company said it interviewed all tutors and required a basic DBS background check. Startups.co.uk ranked Tutor House 77th on its Startups 100 list in 2019 and 33rd in 2020.
In May 2019 Fuel Ventures, a London venture firm, invested GBP 2 million in what TechCrunch reported as Tutor House's first funding round. The company said it would use the money to expand into other countries and to open a London school for exam retakes.
On 29 September 2022 Wamda reported that oktopi, a UAE-based edtech company, had fully acquired Tutor House to expand in Europe and the Middle East and North Africa. The price was not disclosed. At that time Wamda cited a network of 20,000 tutors, and Dyer was to become head of Tutorspace at oktopi.
In February 2026 Alefredo EdTech, a Jordan-based company founded in 2020 by Ahmad Al Saif, acquired Tutor House for USD 600,000, paid mainly in shares of Alefredo Holding Company with performance-based components, according to Wamda. The acquirer said Tutor House has more than 30,000 tutors and more than 15,000 students, figures reported by Wamda and TechScoop. Alefredo plans to combine its digital curriculum library with Tutor House's tutors, apply AI to tutor matching and offer the service to users in the Gulf.
