About TechCrunch
TechCrunch is an English-language technology and startup news publication. It launched in June 2005 under Archimedes Ventures, led by partners Michael Arrington and Keith Teare. The site became one of the best-known outlets covering venture funding, new companies and consumer technology, and it also runs conferences, most prominently TechCrunch Disrupt. AOL bought TechCrunch in 2010 for about 25 million US dollars. Nieman Lab reported that Arrington said part of his motivation to sell was AOL's ability to take care of technical problems that had affected the site. After Verizon acquired AOL and Yahoo in 2015, TechCrunch was owned by Verizon Media through 2021. In 2021 Verizon sold AOL, Yahoo and TechCrunch to Apollo Global Management, which combined them into a new entity operating as Yahoo. In March 2025 Yahoo announced the sale of TechCrunch to the private equity firm Regent. The announcement came a day after Regent bought Foundry, the parent of PCWorld and TechAdvisor. Financial terms of both deals were not disclosed. Yahoo kept a small ownership stake in TechCrunch, according to Connie Loizos, the site's top newsroom executive and general manager. Loizos said TechCrunch's focus on original reporting differs from Yahoo's aggregation-focused properties such as Yahoo Sports, Yahoo News and Yahoo Finance, which was the reasoning behind the sale. In summary, the publication has passed through several owners since its launch: its founding partners at Archimedes Ventures, then AOL, Verizon Media, the Yahoo group under Apollo Global Management, and now Regent, with Yahoo retaining a minority interest. Throughout, it has kept its focus on startups, venture funding and technology companies, and it has built an events business around that coverage. TechCrunch Disrupt is the publication's flagship event. The 2025 edition, which marked the site's 20th anniversary, took place from 27 to 29 October 2025 at Moscone West in San Francisco. Organisers cited more than 100 exhibitors and over 10,000 attendees, with participants from more than 40 countries. Listed speakers included Astro Teller of X, Raquel Urtasun of Waabi and David George of Andreessen Horowitz. TechCrunch publishes a yearly events calendar alongside its news coverage.
