About SASO
The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization, known as SASO, is a Saudi government body responsible for standards, metrology and quality. Wikipedia gives 1972 as the year of its founding and Riyadh as its headquarters, and says it develops and approves national standards for goods, products and services, issues regulations on how they are assessed against those standards, promotes awareness of standards and quality, and conducts studies and research. The organisation's website lists its address in Riyadh, in the Al Muhammadiyah area opposite King Saud University.
According to Wikipedia, a board of directors led by the Minister of Commerce and Investment oversees SASO. The website links to pages on its governor and board of directors but the text of those pages was not available.
The website describes sectors covering standards and calibration and conformity, e-services for consumers, traders and small businesses such as inspection certificates and appointment booking, and the Taakad app for checking energy efficiency labels and quality marks. SASO also operates a training centre, laboratories and a calibration and measurement centre, and represents Saudi Arabia on technical barriers to trade. The site's statistics report 33,817 approved standards and 82,489 granted certificates; the page carries 2020 and 2021 items, so the figures may be out of date.
A TechScoop article of 21 September 2026 reports that SASO received BSI certification to ISO/IEC 42001, the international AI management system standard, in March 2026, and won a seat on the ISO Technical Management Board for 2026 to 2028.
