About S&P Dow Jones Indices

S&P Dow Jones Indices is an index provider that maintains benchmarks including the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average. It is a joint venture majority-owned by S&P Global, which reports it as its Indices segment and describes it as a global index provider maintaining valuation and index benchmarks for investment advisors, wealth managers and institutional investors. Wikipedia gives its headquarters as 55 Water Street in New York City.

Dow Jones and Company, founded in November 1882 by the reporters Charles Dow, Edward Jones and Charles Bergstresser, published the Dow Jones averages until 2010. In February 2010 CME Group agreed to buy 90 percent of Dow Jones's index business. In November 2011 McGraw-Hill, then owner of S&P Indices, and CME announced they would combine the two businesses, with Alexander Matturri, executive managing director of S&P Indices, as chief executive. The joint venture was formed in July 2012 with McGraw-Hill holding 73 percent, CME 24.4 percent and Dow Jones 2.6 percent. In April 2013 CME bought Dow Jones's interest for USD 80 million, lifting its stake to 27 percent.

According to Wikipedia, the S&P 500 dates from 1957 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average from 1896. The company also produces the S&P 1500, the S&P Global 1200 and national indices such as the S&P/ASX and S&P/TSX series. S&P Global's 2025 annual report says Indices earns asset-linked fees when investors place money in products that track its indices, usage-based royalties, licensing fees, and data and custom index subscriptions. Asset-linked fees, exchange-traded derivative revenue and data subscription revenue all rose in 2025.

Catherine Clay has been chief executive since November 2025. She joined S&P Global from Cboe Global Markets, where she was executive vice president and global head of derivatives from October 2023 and, before that, head of Cboe Data Vantage from March 2021.

In June 2026 TechScoop reported that the company was reviewing where Egypt sits within its emerging market classification, a decision that the article said depends on liquidity and market access for foreign investors.
