About Quora

Quora operates a question-and-answer website and Poe, an app that gives users access to many artificial intelligence models in one place. Wikipedia gives its headquarters as Mountain View, California. The company is privately held.

Adam D'Angelo and Charlie Cheever, both former Facebook employees, founded Quora in 2009; D'Angelo had been Facebook's chief technology officer. Cheever stepped back from day-to-day operations into an advisory role in 2012, and D'Angelo is listed as chief executive. In January 2024 Voicebot noted that D'Angelo also sits on the board of OpenAI. TechCrunch reported 190 million monthly users in April 2017, up from 100 million a year earlier, and Wikipedia cites 300 million monthly unique visitors in 2018. The site added Spanish in 2016 and later German, Italian, Japanese, Hindi, Indonesian and Portuguese, launched the paid Quora+ subscription in August 2021 and ended Space subscriptions and ad revenue sharing in October 2024.

Poe was announced in December 2022 and opened to the public on 3 February 2023. It acts as a front end for models from several developers, lets users build and share custom bots, and since April 2024 has let bot creators charge per message. In July 2025 Poe released a developer API covering more than 100 models, and in November 2025 it added group chats for up to 200 people with more than 200 models and bots. TechScoop reported in July 2026 that Quora was an early customer of the AI-text detection company Pangram.

TechCrunch reported a 50 million dollar Series B in May 2012 and an 80 million dollar Series C in April 2014, with Tiger Global, at a valuation of about 900 million dollars. In April 2017 Quora raised an 85 million dollar Series D, valued at about 1.8 billion dollars, led by Collaborative Fund and Y Combinator's Continuity fund; TechCrunch put total funding at 226 million dollars at that point.

In January 2024 Quora announced 75 million dollars of new funding led by Andreessen Horowitz, most of it earmarked for Poe creators. Pulse 2.0 quoted D'Angelo as saying the valuation was below the company's earlier peak.
