About National Grid
National Grid plc is a British energy infrastructure group that owns and operates electricity and gas networks in Great Britain and the northeastern United States. Wikipedia places its headquarters in London. Its shares are listed on the London Stock Exchange under NG, it is a FTSE 100 constituent, and its American depositary receipts trade on the New York Stock Exchange as NGG.\n\nThe company dates from 1990, when the transmission assets of the Central Electricity Generating Board passed to the National Grid Company. The business was first listed in London in December 1995 and has been National Grid plc since July 2005. It merged with Lattice Group in October 2002 and bought KeySpan of the United States for $7.3 billion in a deal that closed in August 2007.\n\nIn Great Britain the group operates electricity transmission and distribution. In the United States it serves New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. It co-owns the interconnector to France with RTE and BritNed, to the Netherlands, with TenneT. On 1 October 2024 the National Energy System Operator took over the electricity system operator role after a 630 million pound government buyout of that division.\n\nNational Grid has sold large parts of its gas business. It sold its gas distribution business, now Cadent Gas, in two stages in 2017 and 2019. It sold 60% of its gas transmission business in January 2023, forming National Gas, and Macquarie-led investors completed the purchase of the rest in September 2024. The sale of National Grid Renewables completed in May 2025 for net cash proceeds of 1,473 million pounds, and the Grain LNG terminal sale to a Centrica and Energy Capital Partners consortium completed on 28 November 2025 for 1,336 million pounds.\n\nZoë Yujnovich became chief executive in November 2025, succeeding John Pettigrew, and Andy Agg is chief financial officer.
