Its international network includes branches and offices in Johannesburg, Dubai, Addis Ababa, New York, Shanghai and Riyadh.

The bank was founded in Cairo on 25 June 1898 by a group that included the British financier Sir Ernest Cassel. It held the status of Egypt's central bank from 1951 until the government nationalised it in 1960 and created a separate central bank. In 1975 it co-founded Commercial International Bank with Chase Manhattan Bank. Mohamed El-Etreby has been chief executive since 2024, after heading Banque Misr from 2015. The bank's March 2025 bulletin lists Mohamed Barakat as chairman and Yehia Abou ElFotouh and Soha El-Turky as deputy chief executives.

A 2021 cooperation protocol with the American University in Cairo provides electronic service branches on its New Cairo and Tahrir campuses. In March 2021 the bank's investment arm, Al Ahly Capital, completed the purchase of a 75 percent stake in the e-payments company Momken, which became part of a non-bank financial services platform called Tamkeen. In June 2026 Al Ahly Capital led a funding round in the Egyptian fintech MNT-Halan that valued it at 1.4 billion dollars after a first close, and the bank was among the lenders providing debt financing to Blnk.

On 22 September 2026 the Central Bank of the UAE gave preliminary approval for the bank to acquire the UAE branches of Banque Misr; no price or closing date has been published.

After its general assembly, the bank reported net profit after tax of EGP 175.5 billion for the year ended 31 December 2025, up from EGP 133.3 billion in 2024. Total assets were EGP 9.2 trillion, equity EGP 690 billion, customer deposits EGP 5.7 trillion and loans EGP 4.8 trillion. In 2025 Global Business and Finance Magazine named it best bank for trade financing and best retail bank in Egypt.
