About Mitti Labs

Mitti Labs is a climate-technology company, founded in 2023, that uses satellites and artificial intelligence to reduce methane emissions and water use in rice cultivation. Its programmes run across several Indian states, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It was started by Devdut Dalal, Xavier Laguarta and Nate Torbick; Dalal and Laguarta conceived the company after meeting during their MBA studies at Harvard Business School, and Torbick brings a background in remote sensing and environmental monitoring. AgFunder News and TechCrunch described a New York base with a subsidiary in Bengaluru, while another listing places its headquarters in Bengaluru. The company's GeoAI platform combines high-resolution synthetic aperture radar satellite data with on-the-ground measurements and physical models to build a digital twin of each rice plot, tracking the water it uses and the methane it releases. Using this data, Mitti Labs helps farmers adopt water-saving practices, chiefly alternate wetting and drying, which the company says can lower water use by about 40 percent and cut methane emissions by more than half without hurting yields. Those figures are the company's own. It generates verified carbon credits from the emissions farmers avoid and sells them to corporations pursuing net-zero targets. Customers include the carbon marketplace Cool Effect, rice producer Ebro Foods and agrochemical company Syngenta, and Google has agreed to buy 1 million carbon credits from the company through 2030. The programmes have grown from around 8,000 farmers in 2024 to more than 100,000, and the company reports savings of 500 billion litres of water. It says it has about 150 employees. Mitti Labs raised a USD 3 million seed round in 2024 backed by Lightspeed India, Voyager Ventures, Overview and angel investors. In August 2026 it announced a USD 9.5 million Series A led by Aramco Ventures, which was reported as the Saudi corporate investor's first investment in India. Lightspeed India, Godrej Industries Group, the Cisco Foundation, the Francis Family Fund and Volta Circle took part. Total funding stands at USD 12.5 million. A co-founder said Aramco was drawn by the company's work on methane reduction, water resilience and AI-based farming in emerging markets, and that the relationship could give Mitti Labs access to Aramco's carbon-market network. The company plans to use the funds to deepen its presence in India, expand its GeoAI platform and begin projects in the Philippines and Indonesia. Carbon-credit business models remain under scrutiny over how reliably avoided emissions are measured and verified.
