About Gotion Power Morocco
Gotion Power Morocco is the Moroccan subsidiary of Gotion High-Tech, a battery manufacturer headquartered in Hefei, China and listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. It is developing what is described as Africa's first integrated lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery gigafactory, located in the Kenitra area within the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra free trade zone. The complex is designed to cover production from cathode materials through to finished cells and packs, rather than assembling imported components. According to the African Development Bank, the first phase will produce about 10 gigawatt hours of cells and packs a year for electric vehicles, with a long-term goal of 100 GWh. Earlier announcements around the June 2024 agreement with the Moroccan government described a 20 GWh first phase, a later expansion to 40 GWh and an initial investment of roughly MAD 13 billion, or about USD 1.3 billion; capacity and investment figures have varied between outlets. The bank says the first phase should create more than 600 direct jobs and reach local industrial integration of about 70 percent. In July 2026 the African Development Bank approved a loan of EUR 100 million, about USD 114 million, to Gotion Power Morocco. The bank also plans to mobilise up to a further EUR 141 million, roughly USD 162.6 million, from financial partners, acting as mandated lead arranger under its New African Financial Architecture for Development. Kevin Kariuki, the bank's vice president for power, energy, climate and green growth, said battery storage is the missing link in Africa's clean energy transition and that a facility of this scale, powered mainly by renewable energy, supports the integration of solar and wind power into the grid. Gotion Power Morocco's head, Khalid Qalam, said in 2024 that construction would begin within days, that production was targeted for the third quarter of 2026 and that European carmakers had already placed orders. Morocco World News reported in October 2026 that commissioning and start-up of production equipment was due the week of 20 October, with sales of assembled batteries possibly starting by the end of the year. Reports have also described a Kenitra joint venture for cathode materials involving Volkswagen, a Gotion shareholder.
