About Coinbase Ventures
Coinbase Ventures is the venture investing arm of Coinbase, the United States crypto exchange. Fortune reports that it launched in 2018 as a branch of Coinbase to support crypto and blockchain startups, and Wikipedia records its announcement as an early-stage fund on 5 April 2018, with a first named investment in Compound Labs on 16 May 2018.
Shan Aggarwal leads the unit. Crunchbase News described him in December 2021 as head of corporate development and ventures, Global Venturing called him vice president and head of corporate development at Coinbase Ventures in June 2023, and Fortune gave his title as vice president of corporate and business development in October 2024. He previously spent three years as an investor at Greycroft and two years as a consultant at Bain and Company, and has led Coinbase acquisitions including Tagomi and One River Digital.
According to Crunchbase News, the unit began investing at pre-seed and seed stage from Coinbase's balance sheet, made more than 100 investments in 2021 and typically wrote early-stage cheques of 100,000 to 3 million US dollars, with larger strategic investments. It did not usually lead rounds, and had a team of about seven. Fortune reported in October 2024 that it had invested in more than 500 companies, with initial cheques of 1 million to 5 million dollars. Global Venturing cited 339 active portfolio companies and 15 exits in 2023.
Portfolio companies named by Fortune include Bitwise, Consensys, Dune, Securitize, OpenSea, Polygon and Zora. Global Venturing lists Architect, EigenLayer, Dolomite, zkLink and DFlow among 2023 deals. In August 2026 TechScoop reported that Coinbase Ventures joined the Galaxy Digital-led Series B of Soter Insure as a first-time investor alongside Franklin Templeton, with Brevan Howard Digital backing the company again.
Aggarwal told the Messari Mainnet conference in October 2024 that the unit had begun selectively exiting positions held for five years or more, with a handful of exits not yet disclosed. Coinbase Ventures has not published assets under management.
