About Aqaba Governorate Council

The Aqaba Governorate Council is the elected local council for the Aqaba Governorate in Jordan. Governorate councils were created under a 2015 decentralisation law, according to Wikipedia, and were first established in the 2017 local elections. Jordan has 12 such councils.

Governorate councils have no legislative power. They handle development and services in their governorates and endorse budgets, strategic plans and service and infrastructure projects. The law gives them administrative and financial independence, and members serve four-year terms. Wikipedia says most seats are elected and a share is appointed by the central government.

An Interior Ministry report on the opening of the new Aqaba Governorate building named Harb Al-Awidat as Chairman of the Governorate Council; the report is undated and may predate the current council. In 2026, MENA Startup Digest named the council as a backer of the Aqaba Sword-Fish Fund, a startup programme run by the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority.
