Two launches in the same week set out the two available models. Tesla owns everything from the vehicle to the app. Uber and Wayve split the stack three ways. The second is what the industry is actually converging on.
TechScoop has not ridden in a Cybercab. What the Austin launch establishes is narrow and real: a purpose-built vehicle with no controls is carrying paying passengers in one city. Everything beyond that is unproven.
Tesla held a launch event in Austin on 3 September and opened public rides the following day. The Cybercab is a two-seater with no steering wheel and no pedals, running camera-only autonomy, and the fleet is small: at least 51 registered in Texas.
