Its own website describes a remit that covers small and medium-sized businesses and start-ups, equity provision, residential energy efficiency, environmental protection, education funding, municipal financing, export and project finance, and development finance in emerging economies.
KfW says it has pursued this work since 1948. Its headquarters are in Frankfurt am Main, with branches in Berlin and Bonn, and its website says it is present at around 80 locations worldwide. KfW describes itself as a public-law institution supervised in legal terms by the Federal Ministry of Finance in consultation with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Wikipedia states that the federal government holds 80 percent of KfW and the states 20 percent.
Stefan Wintels has chaired the management board since November 2021. KfW announced on 5 December 2024 that its administrative board had reappointed him for four years, to 30 September 2029. KfW names climate-friendly investment, digital modernisation and the venture capital sector among its priorities.
The KfW group includes KfW IPEX-Bank, which handles export and project finance, the development finance institution DEG, and the venture capital investor KfW Capital. KfW reports a promotional volume of EUR 112.8 billion in 2024 and 9,137 employees as of 2025.
KfW raises most of its money on international capital markets. Its website says it raised about EUR 71 billion there in 2025, including EUR 14 billion in green bonds. On 2 July 2026 the news service Econostream reported that KfW raised its 2026 funding target to EUR 80-85 billion from EUR 75-80 billion, after raising EUR 58 billion in the first half of the year.
