Aramco set out the hardware layer of its industrial AI programme at LEAP 2026, naming NVIDIA and Groq as foundational hardware collaborators and Qualcomm on edge computing, inside a framework its technology chief described as intelligence, trust and scale.

Aramco used LEAP 2026 to name the hardware underneath its industrial AI programme, listing collaborations on foundational hardware with NVIDIA and Groq and on edge computing with Qualcomm, as part of a set of memoranda and agreements the company and its subsidiary Aramco Digital announced at the Riyadh show. Ahmad O. Al Khowaiter, Aramco's executive vice president of technology and innovation, framed the company's approach to industrial AI around three pillars: intelligence, trust and scale. Amin Nasser, Aramco's president and chief executive, described LEAP as a platform for bringing global and national ideas, talent and partnerships together. The pillars are worth taking seriously rather than treating as a slogan, because they map onto three genuinely different engineering problems and the partner list reflects that. Intelligence is the model layer. Trust is what an operator needs before it will let software touch anything that can catch fire. Scale is the part almost nobody solves, and it is where the hardware choices live. Split across two names, foundational hardware suggests two different jobs. NVIDIA's accelerators are the default for training, where the workload is enormous, batched and tolerant of latency measured in hours or days. Groq built its business on the other half of the problem: inference, where a trained model is asked a question and has to answer now, and where the economics are driven by cost and latency per query rather than by raw throughput. An operator that intends to run models continuously against live plant data spends most of its compute budget on inference, not training, and the distinction matters more the further a programme gets from the pilot stage. Qualcomm's inclusion under edge computing points at a third location entirely. Edge means processing that happens near the equipment rather than in a data centre — on a controller, a gateway or a camera at the wellhead. Industrial sites generate far more sensor data than anyone can economically send anywhere, and a large fraction of it is uninteresting: a temperature that is exactly where it was a second ago. Doing the first pass of analysis locally, and shipping only what matters, is how the volume problem gets solved. It also removes the dependence on a network link for decisions that cannot wait for one. Aramco Digital has been assembling the connectivity for that separately, having set out a national industrial network on the 450 MHz band designed to carry exactly this class of traffic. The wider agreement set announced at LEAP covers cybersecurity, industrial AI, innovation, the localisation of critical technologies and national industrial capability, and includes a collaboration with Yokogawa on industrial process control and one with SandboxAQ on quantum AI . On the enterprise side, Aramco Digital signed a collaboration agreement with ServiceNow covering workflows across the group's affiliates. What Aramco has not published is the shape of any of the hardware arrangements: no volumes, no values, no deployment locations, no timeline, and no statement of whether these are procurement relationships, co-development, or something looser. Several of them have been described as memoranda of understanding, which commits nobody to a purchase order. The company has also not said how the pieces divide between its own operations, its cloud business and anything it intends to sell on. The pillar most likely to be tested first is trust. Industrial AI that recommends is a reporting tool; industrial AI that acts is a control system, and control systems in refineries are certified, audited and conservative for reasons written in accident reports. That is the boundary a partner list cannot cross on its own. TechScoop is reporting from LEAP 2026 in Riyadh.
